Global payments leader Visa has opened its first data centre in Africa, located in Johannesburg, South Africa. This marks a major milestone in the company’s $57 million investment plan to strengthen digital payments across the continent.
The new facility will improve local transaction processing, boost cybersecurity, and reduce reliance on overseas data centres. Visa says the move reflects its commitment to Africa’s rapidly expanding digital economy, where millions of new users are coming online every year.
By hosting data locally, Visa also aims to meet regulatory requirements and support innovation in mobile banking, fintech, and e-commerce. The project will create new jobs in technology and strengthen the infrastructure needed for Africa’s growing digital financial ecosystem.
